
September 2, 2005 The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed free agent guard/forward Michael Finley. Per club policy terms of the agreement were not announced.The 6-7, 225-pound Finley joins the Spurs after spending the previous eight and a half seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. He was originally drafted 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1995 NBA Draft. We are extremely pleased to have a player of Michaels caliber joining our franchise, said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. He brings an All-Star level of talent to the floor and a high degree of character to the locker room. The two-time All-Star (2000 and 2001) has averaged 19.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.16 steals while appearing in 735 regular season contests. Finley is a career .370 (945-2,557) shooter from behind the arc and is the Mavericks franchise leader in three-pointers made and attempted. He has led the NBA in minutes played three times in his career (1996-97, 1999-2000, 2000-01). In 1996 he was named to the NBAs All-Rookie First Team and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting. He is also one of two players taken in the 1995 NBA Draft to have averaged 20-plus points in four consecutive seasons (Kevin Garnett is the other). Finley played in 64 regular season games for the Mavericks last season where he averaged 15.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists while connecting on .407 (116-285) of his three-point attempts. He also averaged 13.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.31 assists in 13 postseason contests. The 32-year-old Finley enjoyed his best season during the 1999-2000 campaign when he averaged 22.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.33 steals while appearing in all 82 games. He was named to his first All-Star team where he paced the Western Conference reserves with 11 points on 5-6 shooting.
